EMPLOYMENT LAW SEMINAR SUCCESSFUL
On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, members of the Firm's Labor and Litigation Sections presented a free half-day seminar on employment law in Lima, Ohio. The seminar was co-sponsored by the University of Northwestern Ohio and Stolly Insurance and was held in the University's Event Center.
Roughly seventy Lima-area employers attended. They were welcomed to the seminar by Randee Henson of Stolly Insurance and Geri Morris, Director of Human Resources for the University.
The Firm's former managing partner and senior litigator, Ted Rowen, teamed up with well-known plaintiff's counsel, R. Michael Frank, Esq., to discuss steps employers can take to avoid discrimination claims. Their presentation was highlighted by lively but good-natured disagreement between the two friends and former opponents.
Stasia Hanson provided an overview of the Family and Medical Leave Act and its interaction with the alphabet soup of other federal employment laws, including the American with Disabilities Act as Amended and GINA, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act.
Cheryl Wolff, Labor Section Chair, discussed the five most common mistakes made by employers under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and David Smigelski presented a review of the employment problems created by social networking, including Facebook and Twitter.
A panel discussion featuring the presenters and Louise Jackson, the firm's tax and employee benefit expert and a Certified Public Accountant, rounded out the four-hour presentation.
